AUBURN UNIVERSITY, Ala. — School might not be in session during summer, but it can still be a season of study and developing new skills. Thanks to the 4M Youth Camp, 20 students in Mobile County learned lessons on money, meals, manners and math.
A program of Alabama Extension at Auburn University, the camp was held in late July. Following its success, along with a well-received pilot program earlier in April, there are plans to make the camp an annual event.
Taking 4M Youth Camp to Mobile
Portia Johnson, personal financial management state specialist for Extension, said the 4M Youth Camp fulfills the university’s mission by promoting lessons that can improve lives.
“Children need to learn these life skills,” Johnson said. “Topics like money management and food preparation allow for practical application of math. Once we add in proper etiquette and manners, the program covers a lot of skills that make for well-rounded young people. The youth who attend this camp will benefit long into the future thanks to what they learned here.”
Along with decision-making and essential life skills, campers also discovered more about career opportunities thanks to special guests.
“This year, our students learned about jobs in food, hospitality and agriculture,” said Cindy Knowlton, Mobile County Extension director. “We’re very grateful to the community leaders, farmers, chefs, entrepreneurs and business people who gave of their time to educate our campers.”
At the end of 4M Youth Camp, parents of participants are given recipes and conversation starters to help reinforce the lessons learned once everyone is back at home.
