AUBURN UNIVERSITY, Ala. — The Alabama Cooperative Extension System named Tim Gothard as the new coordinator Alabama 4-H Shooting Sports Program. He will begin his role March 24.

Gothard has been an Alabama 4-H agent for seven years and has a strong background in 4-H programming and youth shooting sports. Gothard is also a retired lieutenant colonel and 28-year U.S. Army veteran. During his career, he deployed to Iraq once and served as company commander, battalion training officer and general’s staff operations officer.

Gothard said he has managed and participated in many marksmanship training ranges during his time in the Army, including his participation in the All Army Marksmanship Competition at Fort Benning in 2007 and 2008.

Aiming for Excellence

Alabama Extension Director Mike Phillips said Gothard’s military experience brings a new layer of accountability, safety and responsibility as he leads the youth, equipping him to lead the program to new heights.

“His experience and enthusiasm will be invaluable as we continue to grow and enhance our program,” Phillips said. “We are confident his leadership will strengthen our shooting sports programs and give us an opportunity to revitalize programs for our treasured youth and volunteers.”

Phillips said Gothard’s dedication to youth development and community engagement aligns perfectly with the mission of Alabama 4-H and the 4-H shooting sports program.

Gothard said he looks forward to the opportunity to work alongside youth and volunteers who participate in shooting sports through Alabama 4-H.

“For the dedicated students who practice and are committed to improving their marksmanship, shooting sports teach many life skills that carry through for a lifetime,” Gothard said. “I plan to visit those clubs to meet the volunteers and the students who enjoy shooting sports.”

Gothard also hopes to start more clubs across the state and develop regional competitions to prepare youth for the state competitions.
