Stream restoration using natural channel
design is a growing interest in the State of Alabama. Several agencies
and local groups have partnered to bring workshops focusing on this
topic to areas throughout Alabama.
Introductory workshops are held throughout the state.
These workshops introduce principles of fluvial geomorphology -
the science of stream channel dynamics. Participants learn about
stream processes related to channel formation, field assessment,
techniques to identify bankfull stage, the Rosgen classification
system for natural streams, channel evolution, and restoration options
for impaired streams.
Advanced workshops cover stream survey techniques
such as determining cross sectional area, stream pattern, and stream
profile. Workshop participants spend time in the field learning
how to classify streams based on the Rosgen classification system
and performing stability assessments. Introductory knowledge of
natural channel design is required for the advanced workshops.
Workshop instructors have years of experience in
natural channel design techniques in the southeastern United States.
They present case studies on stream restoration and water quality
issues in Alabama and the region. In each workshop, local partners
share their experiences. The goals of these workshops are to bring
this developing science to Alabama and encourage communities to
implement stream restoration projects using natural channel design
on appropriate streams in their area.
