Davenport, South Georgia Regional Development
Center, Sample Ordinances
We used the draft ordinances that the Georgia Department of Community
Affairs (DCA) provided for us. These are the Georgia Minimum standards
in regards to water resources. DCA provided literature for us to
read ourselves as well as pass on to our city/county governments
so that they could better understand the importance of these ordinances.
Most of our cities/counties amended these ordinances
into their zoning ordinance, but a few wanted them as stand alone
ordinances... so feel free to apply them the way that best meets
your needs. This is what we did: for example, let's say that you
have a county that has all three water resources (Groundwater recharge,
River Corridor, and Wetlands) or even just 2 instead of writing
3 separate ordinances, we combined them into what we called "Water
Resource Protection Districts." In the case where there was
just 1 of the water resource areas, we just called it by that particular
name, i.e.. "Wetlands Protection Districts Ordinance."
Example Ordinances and Literature (Word Documents):

Davenport, South Georgia Regional Development
Center, Curb Marker Program
The company that we used was
DAS Manufacturing Incorporated. We used the Duracast style...
it is a little more expensive but definitely worth the money! We
also had them make our door hangers. The President is Don
Sommer and his number is 1.800.549.6024. He is wonderful to
work with and very helpful.

The South
Georgia Regional Development Center Environmental Planning webpage
has information about the curb marker program and has a link to
a newspaper article about the program and another one for a 4-H
webpage. This website is still under a lot of construction but please
look through the projects I am working on and let me know what you
think!
While on the Environmental Planning page, be sure
to check out their Hazard
Mitigation Project. It is a project that the SGRDC did through
an U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration
(EDA) grant. It goes over the importance of GIS and planning in
reference to water resources. This project is what allowed the SGRDC
to map out all of our water resources through GIS, provide each
of our cities and counties with a digitized map that can be used
in ArcView, and resulted in the adoption of all the Water Resource
District Ordinances.

Below are activities used at Groundwater Festivals throughout Alabama.
They are a lot of fun and do an excellent job of water resource
education.
