Baldwin
County
Baldwin County is one of two coastal counties in
Alabama and home to the popular beach communities of Gulf Shores,
Orange Beach and Fort Morgan. Its population growth rate is second
in the state to the Birmingham area. In an effort to protect the
beauty and natural resources that make Baldwin County a desirable
place to visit and live, the Baldwin
County Commission and Planning and Zoning Department have undertaken
ambitious programs to protect County quality of life through planning
and project implementation.
The Baldwin County Subdivision Regulations have
allowances for conservation subdivisions and restrictions on development
in wetland areas. The County obtained a Wetland Conservation Planning
grant from US EPA that has successfully mapped wetlands located
throughout Baldwin County on Geographic Information Systems. These
GIS maps are available for developers, planners, and the general
public. Efforts are made to concentrate development in areas that
are less environmentally sensitive.
Restoration and implementation of best management
practices are also important to Baldwin County and the Planning
and Zoning Department. Shoreline restoration using Christmas Tree
brush fences and a wetland restoration project along the Fish River
are two of numerous examples of partnerships between the County,
local municipalities, and private landowners to improve and conserve
Baldwin County's natural resources.
