4-H RiverKids

Map of counties participating in the Alabama 4-H RiverKids program4-H RiverKids is a youth kayaking program that is aimed at helping youth develop safe paddling skills, while exploring the abundant water resources in our state. Alabama is one of the most variety-rich places in the country to paddle, with more navigable waterways than any other state!

Our instructors complete 24-hours of hands-on training and hold current certifications in CPR, Wilderness and Remote First Aid, and Small Craft Safety.

4-H RiverKids is currently being offered to youth ages 9-18 in Barbour, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Colbert, Coosa, Covington, Dale, Elmore, Etowah, Houston, Jackson, Lee, Limestone, Marion, Marshall, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, Tallapoosa, Walker, and Winston counties! Coming soon to Cullman, Escambia, and Fayette counties!

We offer 1-day paddling classes and special events and excursions!

In addition to engaging youth in educational activities, this is also an opportunity to promote and contribute to Alabama’s Ecotourism by:

  1. increasing the use of our waterways
  2. increasing the knowledge and awareness of environmental and management issues
  3. the incorporation of service projects

We believe that this can be accomplished by working in collaboration with the Alabama Scenic River Trail Association (ASRT), Alabama Water Watch, and other partnering organizations to engage youth in safe, fun educational outdoor recreation, stewardship, and service programming.
