About Wilcox County

Wilcox County was established Dec. 13, 1819, one day before Alabama became a state. It was named for Lt. Joseph M. Wilcox. The county covers 883 square miles and the Alabama River crosses it from the northeast to the southeast. Camden is the county seat. The charter chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy was formed in Wilcox County and is still active today.

The rural county population of 13,440 is 69.2 percent black and 30.8 percent white. There are 12 educational outlets in the county including six elementary schools, three middle schools and three high schools. The majority of the adult population has a high school education.

Cotton, corn, cattle, hay and timber are the major agricultural crops grown in the county. Other crops include watermelons, peaches, sweet potatoes and peas. Weyerhaeuser is the major industry. Tourist attractions include many historic homes, Roland Cooper State Park, Lake Dannelly, and hunting and fishing.

The Wilcox County Extension Office has one full-time and seven part-time employees and about 20 volunteers who help carry out Extension programs. The Begin Education Early and NEP programs are popular in the county. About 400 youth are involved in 4-H.
