About Covington County

Covington County is located 90 miles south of Montgomery, centrally located between Mobile and Dothan, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida. Andalusia is the county seat. Once inhabited by the Creek Indians, Andalusia has many Indian burial mounds, arrowheads and other relics.

Peanuts, cotton, corn, cattle, poultry, hogs, pecans and forestry are the major agricultural crops in the county. Other crops grown include soybeans, fruits, vegetables, cotton and wheat. Major industries include Shaw Industries, Covington Clothing Industries, Covington Electric Co-op, Southwest Alabama Gas District and Micolas Mills (cotton). Tourist attractions in the county include Lake Jackson, Conecuh National Forest, Gantt Lake, Point A Lake, art festivals, Martha and Solon Dixon Center for the Performing Arts and the World Champion Domino Tournament.

The Covington County Extension Office has four full-time and four part-time employees and about 100 volunteers who help with Extension programs and services. Some of the more popular programs in the county are agriculture, NEP, EFNEP and 4-H. About 1,900 youth are involved in 4-H.
