About Covington County

Covington County is located 90 miles south of Montgomery, centrally located between Mobile and Dothan, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida. Andalusia is the county seat. Once inhabited by the Creek Indians, Andalusia has many Indian burial mounds, arrowheads and other relics.

Peanuts, cotton, corn, cattle, poultry, pecans and forestry are the major agricultural crops in the county. Other crops grown include soybeans, fruits, vegetables, cotton and wheat. Major industries include Shaw Industries, Power South Energy, Covington Electric Cooperative, Southeast Alabama Gas District and SITEL. Tourist attractions in the county include Lake Jackson, Conecuh National Forest, Gantt Lake, Point A Lake, art festivals, Martha and Solon Dixon Center for the Performing Arts and the World Champion Domino Tournament.

The Covington County Extension Office has six full-time and one part-time employees. Areas of assistance provided by Extension are agriculture, horticulture, nutrition education, food safety and preservation, and 4-H. About 1,200 youth are involved in 4-H.
