The Successful Aging Initiative 2019 is a free one-day event that is open to the public and designed to address issues impacting Alabama’s older adults. Participants obtain easy-to-understand information and resources that enable them to make informed decisions, to maintain independence, to play active roles in society, and to improve their quality of life. Older adults age 50+ and family members, caregivers, social workers, faith-based leaders, and senior service providers are highly encouraged to attend.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Tommie “Tonea” Stewart. Stewart is a professional actress, play director, national museum exhibit director, tenured professor, and dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Alabama State University. As an actress, she is best known for her role as Miss Etta Kibbee in The Heat of the Night. She earned an NAACP Image Award for her role in the film adaptation of John Grisham’s novel A Time to Kill and a New York World Festival Gold Medal Award for the narration of Public Radio International’s series Remembering Slavery.
Students from J. F. Drake State Community and Technical College will provide health screenings, and hair and skin care services. COSTCO will provide flu shots at no cost for medicare recipients.
Drug Take Back Drive
Alabama Extension will partner with Alabama A&M University’s Department of Public Safety, WellStone Behavioral Health, and other local partners in a drug take back initiative. Participants are asked to bring expired and unused prescription and over-the-counter medication for proper disposal.
How to prepare for the Drug Take Back Drive
Remove all personal information such as name and address from medicine containers. Place the medication for humans or pets in a plastic bag. Bring the medication in a plastic bag with you to the event and drop off to police officers before entering the facility. All medication will be incinerated by police.
