Growing citrus at home can be an exciting endeavor in Alabama but it indeed has its challenges. There are many things to consider and do in order to grow and harvest those tasty lemons, limes, and satsumas. Join us for a class on citrus basics as Extension and Auburn University professionals discuss what is neccessary to successfully grow citrus in Central Alabama. Featured speakers will be: Dr. James Spiers, Associate Professor – Auburn University Horticulture; Dr. Edgar Vinson, Fruit Specialist – Alabama Extension; Dr. Chip East, Regional Extension Agent for Commercial Horticulture, and Shane Harris, Tallapoosa County Extension Coordinator. Topics to be covered include:
– Types of Citrus and Recommended Varieties
– Container Production vs In Ground
– Growing Medias and Fertilization
– Planting Methods
– Irrigation
– Pruning Tips
– Insect Pests and Plant Diseases
– Common Abiotic Problems
– Cold Protection
– Harvest and Storage
– Storages Methods and Culinary Uses
– Citrus Taste Testing
All participants will also receive samples of Alabama grown citrus.
