A farmer meeting to discuss the sustainable irrigation expansion project coming to the Middle Alabama River Basin is scheduled for July 1st, 2021.
This meeting will be held at the Blackbelt Research and Extension Center (60 Co Rd 944, Marion Junction, AL 36759) starting at 5 PM. The meeting is expected to last two hours.
A new cost-share program that will promote sustainable irrigation expansion in Dallas County and surrounding counties will be discussed. An application must be submitted to the Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Committee to be considered for the project. Potential locations will undergo on-site evaluations before operations are selected for funding. Applicants must own or operate eligible land that is currently used for crop or livestock production. Eligible land includes cropland, rangeland, pasture, and other farm or ranch lands located within the project boundary.
The program’s purpose is to use funds from the USDA-NRCS (PL-566) to sustainably increase acres under irrigation in the Middle Alabama River Basin. The results would improve soils, protect water, minimize cultural and environmental impacts, and minimize damage to plants.
The project is made possible by the following organizations: Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Committee, Auburn University, U.S. Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
