BNC members with President Hugine and Dr. Allen Malone

ALABAMA A&M UNIVERSITY, Ala. – Alabama Extension at Alabama A&M University (AAMU) recently contributed funds to the #GIVEFIVE Campaign.  AAMU’s Basic Needs Coalition (AAMU BNC) spearheads the initiative to end student hunger. Andrea Morris, an Alabama Extension health and nutrition specialist, serves as the BNC chair.

The AAMU BNC is one of 10 coalitions that exists on Alabama college campuses, such as Auburn University, to address student hunger. The AAMU BNC will also address student housing as well as mental and physical health needs. As a result, students will have a chance to thrive academically, mentally, physically and socially.

According to the National #RealCollege Survey among 86,000 college students:

  • 45 percent of respondents were food insecure in the prior 30 days.
  • 56 percent of respondents were housing insecure in the previous year.

#GIVEFIVE Campaign

A foundation account is now available to support the AAMU BNC efforts. Allen Malone, 1890 Extension administrator, donated $500 on behalf of Alabama Extension at AAMU.

“I am excited about the opportunity for the Urban Extension program to engage with the broader university community and to meet the urgent needs of our students,” Malone said. “This initiative will lead to greater partnerships and a synergy that will enhance the lives of citizens of North Alabama.”

Alabama Extension’s donation provides seed funding. However, additional funds are needed. That’s why AAMU faculty and staff, as well as the general public, are asked to donate $5 or more to the #GIVEFIVE Campaign. Donations will go to establish and maintain a campus food pantry and to meet other urgent needs of AAMU students.

“The #GIVEFIVE donation provides initial funding to support and implement strategies that address basic student needs,” Morris said. “For example, hunger, financial hardships, emergency services, clothing needs, as well as medical and mental health care.”
