Home & Family
AUBURN UNIVERSITY, Ala. – With the beauty of fall all around, it’s about time to bring the same beauty indoors. What better way to celebrate with friends and family than with the beautiful natural resources from your own back yard.
With these simple decoration ideas from Alabama Extension agent Lucy Edwards, your house will be quickly transformed into a fall sanctuary.
Aside from a turkey, owls are a popular symbol of the fall season.
For cute nature owls to display across the home, collect these items:
- Pine bark
- Tacky glue or hot glue
After collecting these items, the fun begins. Gently chip the pine bark into the shape of an owl. Then, glue two acorn caps to the bark to create the owl’s eyes. Next, glue a seed under the eyes to create the owl’s beak. Lastly, glue the owl to a leaf branch and display.
“For an additional activity, consider painting the owl and twig for more color,” Edwards said.
Acorn Napkin Tie
Utilize the elegant simplicity fall has to offer, add these acorn napkin ties to your table scape. Use these items:
- Several small acorns, some with twigs attached
- Fake pearls
- ¾ inch diameter fall colored ribbon
- Hot glue
First, separate the acorn caps from the acorn. Then, insert a fake pearl into one acorn cap per napkin tie. Next, grab the napkins and tie your fall ribbon of choice around each napkin. Lastly, hot glue the pearl and acorn to the ribbon. Voila! A natural, elegant table setting.
Nothing screams fall like a natural wreath on the door. To begin creating, collect these items:
- Grapevine wreath
- Pine cones
- Hot glue
Choose a spot on the wreath to begin placing the beautiful collections from nature.
“Continue to place the items in one direction around the wreath, alternating between the items,” Edwards said.
Once they are placed as desired, hot glue the pieces to the wreath. Edwards says this is a great way to let individual creativity shine.
Vegetable Candle Holders
Not only does fall bring beautiful foliage, but it also brings harvests and Thanksgiving feasts. These vegetable candle holders are sure to set the tone for a grand feast.
Here are some things you may need:
- Green beans
- Rubber bands
- 3 white pillar candles
- Fall-colored ribbon
With a pillar candle in hand, stretch two sturdy rubber bands around the candle. Then, insert the asparagus and green bean stalks underneath the band. Repeat this process for the second candle. Cover the rubber bands on the candles with a fall colored ribbon of your choice. For the third candle, hollow out an artichoke and place the candle in the center of the vegetable.
“Once you are finished with all three candles, place them on a platter decorated with mums, leaves or berries,” Edwards said.
These natural arrangements will transform your home for all fall celebrations. Gather together with family and friends around these beautiful, natural decorations. For more information about decorating with natural resources, visit the Alabama Extension website, www.aces.edu.
