With the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), having to undergo a quarantine of up to two weeks is a possibility. A quarantine can mean that you may run out of certain ingredients in your kitchen. Following are substitutions for several common ingredients.

Common Ingredient Substitutions

Cream of tartarDistilled white vinegar or lemon juice
VinegarLemon juice
Sour cream or mayonnaisePlain yogurt
ButtermilkPlain yogurt
Buttermilk1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar + enough milk to make 1 cup
Let mixture sit for 5 minutes.
1 cup self-rising flour3/4 cup and 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour + 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder + 1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 cup heavy cream (for baking)3/4 cup milk + 1/3 cup butter or margarine
1 large egg (for baking)1/4 cup applesauce
½ teaspoon baking soda2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking powder1/4 teaspoon baking soda + 1/2 teaspoon cream tartar + 1/4 teaspoon cornstarch
1 cup cake flour3/4 cup sifted all-purpose flour + 2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon finely cut fresh herbs1 teaspoon dried leaf herbs or ½ teaspoon ground dried herbs
