Coronavirus: Common Ingredient Substitutions

With the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), having to undergo a quarantine of up to two weeks is a possibility. A quarantine can mean that you may run out of certain ingredients in your kitchen. Following are substitutions for several common ingredients.
Common Ingredient Substitutions
Ingredient | Substitution |

Cream of tartar | Distilled white vinegar or lemon juice |
Vinegar | Lemon juice |
Sour cream or mayonnaise | Plain yogurt |
Buttermilk | Plain yogurt |
Buttermilk | 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar + enough milk to make 1 cup Let mixture sit for 5 minutes. |
1 cup self-rising flour | 3/4 cup and 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour + 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder + 1/2 teaspoon of salt |
1 cup heavy cream (for baking) | 3/4 cup milk + 1/3 cup butter or margarine |
1 large egg (for baking) | 1/4 cup applesauce |
½ teaspoon baking soda | 2 teaspoons baking powder |
1 teaspoon baking powder | 1/4 teaspoon baking soda + 1/2 teaspoon cream tartar + 1/4 teaspoon cornstarch |
1 cup cake flour | 3/4 cup sifted all-purpose flour + 2 tablespoons cornstarch |
