Alabama 4-H National Conference attendees building better future

AUBURN UNIVERSITY, Ala. – Confidence, better communication and positive community change are the focus of Alabama 4-H citizenship and leadership programs again this year. 4-H encourages members to learn, lead and make a difference in the communities they serve.

“We support our youth as they learn more about themselves and how their individual leadership skills can benefit their communities and the world,” said Joy Scott, an Alabama 4-H Extension specialist. “Alabama 4-H aims to provide several leadership opportunities year-round to help our young people grow as leaders.”

National 4-H Conference

A select group of Alabama 4-H members recently attended National 4-H Conference, a six-day event hosted in Washington, D.C.

The conference provides an opportunity for 4-H members to engage in personal development experiences to increase knowledge, resources and skills, discuss topics affecting youth and 4-H programming nationwide, and create positive social change in their communities in a meaningful way.

“National 4-H Conference is about growing leaders,” said Josie Chance, Bibb County 4-H member. “I spent the week growing knowledge, growing skills, growing relationships with new friends and growing as a person.”

In addition, participants attend educational workshops and meet with representatives on Capitol Hill.

“Attending National 4-H Conference has allowed me to gain numerous benefits, including improving communication skills, gaining expert knowledge on civic engagement, and renewing motivation and confidence,” said Madison Wilbanks, Lauderdale County 4-H member. “One of the biggest aspects of the conference is to network with other 4-H’ers from across the world, to propose a presentation about entrepreneurship to the U.S. Department of Labor. National 4-H Conference has done wonders for me as an individual. It has set me up for a lifetime of growth and inspiration, and has taught me the importance of diversity throughout our nation.”

4-H Leadership Events

Alabama 4-H members have the opportunity to refine their leadership and citizenship skills throughout the year. National Conference, National Congress, the Alabama 4-H Midwinter Leadership Retreat, and the Alabama 4-H Youth Leadership Conference are a few of the leadership events offered by the program.
