Hydrologic Unit Codes

Hydrologic Unit Codes (HUC) data describe watersheds as polygons, defined by digital elevation model data.

HUC basins decrease in size with an increase in levels.  For example, HUC6 watersheds are major river basins in Alabama, for example the Alabama River Basin, while HUC12 watersheds are for 2nd and 3rd order streams, for example Jackson Lake.

Respective HUC designations and HUC names for the reach segments including the River Basin name and the downstream (DS) HUC that receives the flow from each segment.

HUC 6 — Alabama River Basin

HUC 12 —Jackson Lake Watershed in the Alabama River Basin

Each HUC 12 polygon is attributed with HUC6, HUC8, and HUC10 values as well as the basin/watershed names.
