QUESTION:  
Can clearing up turbidity caused by fine sediment in a drinking water reservoir cause taste and odor problems to develop in the water supply?
ANSWER:  
Yes, this is possible. Cases have been reported where odor problems have developed. Some reservoir source waters may have enough nutrient enrichment to promote algae growth but also have sediment turbidity at a level that prevents deep enough sunlight penetration to promote the excessive algae growth. If the sediment turbidity is reduced without a corresponding reduction in nutrient levels, the increased light penetration can promote accelerated algae growth and subsequently lead to taste and odor problems with the water.
