SLN...

  • Service-Learning Network [SLN] is an out-reach volunteer community service program at Alabama A&M University [AAMU] under the auspices of the School of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
  • SLN has been active in Madison County on the AAMU campus since 1991.
  • SLN officially became Service-Learning Network outreach program on AAMU's campus on January 15, 1997. Dr. Virginia Caples, 1890 Administrator, executed a "Memorandum of Understanding" with the deans of six academic schools and the University administration. On July 17, 2003, Dr. Caples established a Leadership Committee with the charge to combine all service-learning acivities on AAMU's campus.
  • SLN's purpose is to recruit student volunteers from all educational disciplines in the various academic schools and departments at the university. And to involve student organizations in meaningful volunteer experiences.
  • SLN's mission is to improve the quality of life of children, youth, families, adults, and limited-resource citizens.

SLN students benefit from participating in the program by being afforded opportunities to:

  • Officially trained to become a member of a combined Service-Learning Network at the Univeristy level.
  • Realize the importance of volunteering in the community to improve citizens quality of life.
  • Realize self-wroth and accomplishment by turning leisure time into producive community service.
  • Learn marketable skills and work ethics through volunteer work experiences.


Kinds of Involvement...

SLN student volunteer program provides opportunities for long- and short-term community service projects. Volunteers coordinate and participate in community educational programs focused on:

  • Healthservices/GED preparation
  • Nutrition for the elderly, teen mothers, and children
  • Self-esteem development for youth and adults
  • Tutorial service/Consumer education
  • Job-preparedness skills/Homelessness
  • Performing and cultural arts
  • Child care and development/Office management
  • Mentoring and role modeling
  • Disaster and safety preparedness


Awards...

  • Presidential Award: 90 plus hours
  • Gold Award: 60-89 hours
  • Silver Award: 50-59 hours
  • Bronze Award: 20-39 hours
  • Recognition Certificate: Less than 20 hours
