Career Awareness for Business and Industry

Preparing Alabama's youth for the 21st century workforce

 

Career Awareness for Business and Industry is an educational program that teaches junior high and senior high school students how to realistically plan and prepare for future careers.

Youth learn through structured activities that emphasize school- and work-based learning. Activities include guest speakers, site tours, focused lessons, job shadowing, problem-solving, career guidance and more.


Participants will...

  • Identify their personal interests, talents, and goals
  • Learn career options in a variety of businesses and industries
  • Learn education, skills, and personal characteristics required for a variety of careers
  • Develop competencies in collecting and using information, critical thinking, and problem solving
  • Create a career preparation plan


Career Awareness training is important to Alabama's future

Companies, schools, parents, and community leaders collaborate and tailor the CABI program to meet local needs.


Expected Outcomes:

  • Youth develop a vision for their future after high school
  • Youth become motivated to pursue education, training or a first job after high school
  • Youth experience the real world of work
  • Employers and educators work as joint partners in career education


Curriculum

CABI incorporates the following three active learning elements:

  • Introduction to the World of Work
    • Study the structure, size, scope and career opportunities in a host business and its broader industry.
  • Guided Exploration
    • Examine the workplace through problem-solving exercises, shadowing, and various hands-on activities.
  • Career Preparation
    • Learn and practice the steps to career selection, and develop a career preparation plan.
