Introduction

Today, workforce preparation and computer knowledge go hand-in-hand because they are key ingredients to employment opportunities. This is the right time for all Americans to go online as new data reveals the "overall level of U.S. digital inclusion is rapidly increasing." [1]

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System's Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs Unit at Alabama A&M University (AAMU) and the Land-Grant Program of West Virginia State College (WVSC) are excited to offer the Workforce Education and Career Assistance (WECAN4U) Network. The website is designed to provide residents in Alabama and West Virginia with an easy pathway to Internet-based workforce resources. It is linked to a number of websites that provide national employment-related opportunities, including economic development, starting a business, and other financial management resources.

As our country faces the future, companies are being challenged to compete in a global economy. Workers must be trained as lifelong learners to ensure viable competitiveness in the world market. WECAN4U offers many individuals the means to access workforce-related resources that are available in a Web-based environment.

Welcome to WECAN4U! We wish you success.

About the WECAN4U Website

The Workforce Education and Career Assistance Network For You (WECAN4U) website is a joint effort of Alabama Cooperative Extension System and WVSC. WECAN4U is a direct, but non-exhaustive gateway to aid Internet searches for employment, training, education, and other workforce-related information in West Virginia, Alabama, and the nation. [2] The framework for the site was created in October 2000 by Extension Specialists Rosalie M. Lane at AAMU and Ray Ali at WVSC.

WECAN4U Website Goals:

  • To provide Internet access to information that prepares individuals to secure gainful employment or to start a business.
  • To provide opportunities for individuals who lack computer and Internet skills to enhance the skills of others and to compete for jobs offered in an online environment.
  • To create a one-stop environment that brings together electronic resources provided by national and international government entities.
  • To provide information relating to personal money management strategies, including goal setting, budgeting, savings, etc.
