Alabama Pesticide Container Disposal Program
ANR-736, 1992, Jesse C. LaPrade, Extension Environmental Specialist, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Community Resource Development, Auburn University, David Said, Pesticide Administrator and John Bloch, Director, Pesticides and Plant Industries, Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries
| Why rinse pesticide containers? It's easy and it saves money; it helps protect people and helps protect the environment.
- Rinsate from the containers, when added right into the sprayer tank, efficiently and economically uses all pesticide in the container. This eliminates the need to store and later dispose of the rinsate.
- Unless rinsed from the container immediately, some pesticides will solidify quickly and become difficult to remove.
- Rinsing pesticide containers is a good, sound agricultural and environmental practice.
- Proper rinsing is required by federal and state regulations.
There are two different procedures for properly rinsing pesticide containers:
- pressure rinsing
- triple rinsing
Pressure Rinsing
Pressure rinsing forces remaining pesticide from containers by using a special nozzle attached to the end of a hose. It is faster and easier than triple-rinsing and can be used with plastic and non-pressurized metal pesticide containers. It also renders the container useless for alternate purposes and indicates that the containers have been rinsed.
How To Pressure Rinse
- Remove cover from container. Empty the pesticide into the spray tank and let the container drain for 30 seconds.
- Continue holding the container upside down over the sprayer tank opening so rinsate will run into the sprayer tank.
- Insert the pressure-rinse nozzle by puncturing through the bottom of one side of the pesticide container.
- Rinse for length of time recommended by the manufacturer (generally 30 seconds or more), rotating the nozzle while rinsing.
- The cap is not recyclable. Triple rinse it and dispose of it in sanitary landfill waste.
- Store cleaned containers out of the rain until they are transported to a recycling collection point.
Triple Rinsing
Triple rinsing means just that, rinsing the container three times. Triple rinsing can be used on plastic, nonpressurized metal, and glass containers.
How To Triple Rinse
- Remove cover from the container. Empty the pesticide into the sprayer tank and let the container drain for 30 seconds.
|
- Fill the container 10% to 20% full of water or rinse solution.
- Secure the cover on the container.
- Swirl the container to rinse all inside surfaces.
- Remove cover from the container. Add the rinsate from the container to sprayer tank and let drain for 30 seconds or more.
- Repeat steps 2 through 5 two more times.
- The cap is not recyclable. Triple rinse it and dispose of it in sanitary landfill waste.
- Store cleaned containers out of the rain until they are transported to a recycling collection point.

Remember:
- Read and follow all label instructions.
- Wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment when working with pesticides
- Never reuse a pesticide container for any purpose.
- Dispose of all pesticide containers properly.
- Use a back-flow prevention device when filling sprayer tanks or rinsing pesticide containers.
- Only properly rinsed containers can be recycled!
- Rinsing containers with rinsate put in spray tank will save money by using all that is paid for, prevent costly hazardous waste clean-up, and preserve the environment for future generations.
Even during a busy season, the few extra minutes it takes to properly rinse empty pesticide containers is time well spent!
