Portable Containment System

ANR-731, 1992, Jesse C. LaPrade, Extension Environmental Specialist, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Community Resource Development, Auburn University

Groundwater contamination is a major concern of the agriculture industry. Point source spills and activities at pesticide mixing and loading sites are major sources of the contamination. For this reason, it is important for pesticide users to utilize a pesticide containment facility. Most containment facilities today are permanent concrete pads. However, there are times when permanent pesticide containment sites are not practical or desirable. When this is the case, portable containment systems may be the answer.

In contrast to permanent concrete loading pads which allow only a fixed operation site, portable systems can be laid out in any working area and rolled up again when not in use.

Portable containment systems can be used for various containment needs. They can be used when mixing pesticides and when loading equipment, trucks, or aircraft. They can also be used as a secondary containment source or a wash pad. They can even be used as a liner for old, cracked, concrete loading pads. Various options are available because of the flexible design and modular units. The design and size provide a large surface area for substantial liquid containment. The coated fabric, specifically designed for agricultural chemical containment, is durable, reliable, and pesticide resistant.

The new, portable containment systems are definitely an answer to many pesticide containment problems. There are several different portable units currently available. For more information, write to Volm Bag Co., Inc., P.O. Box 170, Antigo, Wisconsin 54409.
