NCSUgarden.com is a web-based interactive management tool that streamlines administration, facilitates delegation, increases communication and simplifies reporting. This tool enables volunteers to manage their own contact information and profile, register for volunteer opportunities, log hours, and connect with other volunteers. Currently 80 NC counties have signed on with a total of 2,722 Master Gardeners registered. Extension professionals in AK, AL, AR, MA, MD, MN, NY, OK, SD, TX, UT and WY have expressed interest in the system.

University of Illinois cut budget the usual ways: non-replacement after retirements, hiring freeze, furloughs, layoffs, and travel reduced or eliminated. Video Conferencing increased program content-delivery via Distance Education technology. Illinois expanded their Cisco Meeting Place teleconference bridge (same as WebEx) by 200 individual web cams, and 26 large Polycom video conference units. The Illinois system connects live video pictures and digital stereo audio; and also displays PowerPoint’s, text documents, spreadsheets, and real-time web sites/portals. Podcasts are created automatically. Telephone audio is available for rural sites or cell phones. Recordings for later use are available over phone or web.

Abstract: Many institutions, including eXtension, have selected and are using Moodle as their online course delivery system. Moodle effectively reaches public audiences with in-depth learning content, and eXtension provides Moodle space for anyone in the Cooperative Extension System to develop an online course. Participants in this preconference workshop will have their own course shells in which to work, and will learn how to create various resources and activities supporting a course topic of their choosing. Courses begun during this workshop will be available for participants to complete and actually release for enrollment as desired to support their respective Extension education efforts. The only prerequisite is to have an eXtension ID and an idea for a course you would like to develop

Abstract: At NETC 2008 the Penn State Educational Technologists presented a session on how to develop, deliver and evaluate a Technology Boot Camp for Cooperative Extension Educators. Throughout 2008 we continued to offer face-to-face Technology Boot Camps. Then, in 2009 we went virtual. During this 45 minute session we will discuss our experiences in conducting virtual Technology Training Boot Camps and share tips on what works and what doesn’t work.

Title: Engaging Emerging Populations of Adults with Interactive Activities in a 3D Virtual Learning Environment

Abstract: The internet, particularly 3D virtual learning environments, has become a venue of choice for many young adults who have grown up in a period of rapidly advancing technology. This emerging population is increasingly difficult to engage with traditional Extension programming. This project deals with the feasibility and effectiveness of engaging young adults with a media in which they feel comfortable. With this in mind, a 3D virtual kitchen was created to teach foodservice staff about foodborne hazards. Evaluation of user perception, social interaction, and educational content of the virtual learning module was accomplished through a chat based survey instrument. Participants reported positively about their user experience and the educational content was found to be appropriate and useful. Responses related to the social realm indicated that participants’ pro-social needs were met in this environment.

Title: Automating the Creation of Web-based Extension Information Part I

Abstract: Program specific newsletters, digitally produced by the Extension faculty in Florida’s Northwest District provides timely information to subscribers on a wide array of Extension topics. County faculty input articles and support materials via an on-line system. The advantages include streamlining of the production process (no need to transfer or email files), support for collaboration when multiple people are involved in producing the information, better production coordination and less time and effort required for everyone. This production system includes the ability to automatically generate a quality PDF document and a newsletter web site.

Title: The Creation of a Bank-In-A-Box: Teaching Youth Through Technology

Abstract: Each year, America’s high schools graduate thousands of young adults who are unprepared in matters financial decisions. The LSU AgCenter Extension Service and Louisiana Federal Credit Union developed the Real World–Bank in a Box simulation, which simulates real-life experiences to help make youth aware of the money management skills they need in the “real world”. Students receive a job, an account and a debit card, and must make their way through a month by making sound financial decisions based on their income. Everything in the simulation is electronic and based on current pricing on the area in which the simulation is conducting.

Abstract: Along with advancements in mobile devices the "mobile web" has matured, going from simple text-only applications to to applications that provide powerful and rich experiences for the users. Many mobile devices use a browser based on the WebKit browser like iPhone, Android, and the Palm Pre. These devices are well positioned for content-oriented growth. A few of the reasons for the growth in use of the mobile web are: 1. development of software specifically designed for use with mobile devices along with better tools (jQuery, Ajax) 2. faster and better internet connectivity, 3. larger and better color displays for the mobile devices, and 4. touch screens for input. Are you developing a web site designed for mobile devices? Come prepared to discuss your lessons-learned, best-practices, and thoughts on mobile sites in general. Title: Coldfusion: Building A Drill-Down Interface

Abstract: Summary This course is designed for individuals who are familiar with Coldfusion or those who are interested in the ease of use of programming within the Coldfusion environment. Those participating in this session will learn through participation and will come away with an actual working product. Individuals will learn the following: A drill-down interface is a pair of list and detail web pages that work together to display information based on a specific user request. The list page provides an index of options to view, where the detail page displays the result of a user’s selection. Information is often passed from one page to the next via a URL string. In this unit you will learn how to create a drill-down interface and display the detailed information in HTML, PDF and grid interfaces.
