Master Gardener Volunteer Activities and Opportunites

One of the most rewarding parts of being a Master Gardener is working on community betterment projects.

Extension Office Work

  1. Answering home gardening and pest management phone calls and helping visitors at the Cooperative Extension Office or Satellite Offices
  2. Organize reference materials, publications, files for Master Gardeners to disseminate
  3. Maintain office reference library

Special Events

  1. Coordinate or assist with home and garden shows, county fairs, gardening information booths, problem diagnostic clinics, etc.
  2. Prepare displays, posters, advertisement, or any art work that benefits or represents the Master Gardener Volunteer program or Cooperative Extension
  3. Serve as Special Events Coordinator

Journalism

  1. Write articles for local association newsletter
  2. Write news articles (must be approved by county Extension Agent prior to release)
  3. Serve as Newsletter Editor, Communications Director, Publicity Director, etc.
  4. Contribute in the preparation of the Master Gardener Handbook

Research

  1. Work on research projects and reports for the purpose of developing and disseminating information, or seeking grants, under the supervision of the county Extension agent

Landscaping Projects

  1. Create and maintain demonstration gardens
  2. Install a school yard teaching garden
  3. Serve as MG Group Liaison (coordinate cooperative programs with other agencies)
  4. Participate in on-site lawn clinics
  5. Answer questions and take soil samples in residential area

Presentations and Programs

  1. Organize, research, plan and present programs/classes to civic or garden clubs, schools, Master Gardener classes or meetings, conferences, botanical gardens, community college, etc.
  2. Serve as a speakers bureau coordinator or program director

Youth Gardening Activities

  1. Assist classroom teachers with gardening projects, school gardens or landscapes (involving students)
  2. 4-H youth activities (including judging projects)
  3. Mentor a Jr. Master Gardener program in your county
  4. Conduct school gardening programs

Other Activities

  • Help set up and maintain Web site
  • Photograph Master Gardener Projects
