Description: On Thursday, May 17th The Alabama Cooperative Extension System will host a Good Agricultural Practices (GAP’s) Food Safety Training. This training will be held in the Lee County Extension office beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending around 1:00 p.m. and lunch will be provided. There is no registration fee, but you must pre-register to attend. You can pre-register by calling the Lee County Extension office at (334) 749-3353 by May 15th. At this meeting you will learn about bacterial and other harmful microorganisms commonly associated with fresh produce, how to write your own Good Agricultural Practices Plan, how to develop Standard Operation Procedures for your farm or packing operation, and the USDA Third Party Audit process. This training is basically for commercial fruit and vegetable farmers who market on a large scale. Some companies will only buy from farms that are GAP certified. However, food safety is an issue of importance to all of us and any small or large producer may benefit from this training.
