Description: There is growing interest among private landowners to diversify the benefits from their property through multiple-use management. However, small-scale private landowners often have limited information regarding how to plan for management of these benefits. A map is one of the most important tools a rural or urban forest landowner needs for planning and management especially when planning for multiple uses. This 1 day short course is a hands-on introductory course that starts at the beginning for private forest landowners, conservation professional (foresters, wildlife biologists, etc.), or anyone interested in making maps. This course focuses on utilizing online mapping and spatial resources to make maps and utilize soils information, aerial photography, and topographic layers for an area of interest (timber stand, agriculture field, pasture, etc.). The format includes instructor led examples for students to follow at their individual computers with a booklet including screen shots and tips for future reference. See http://www.lpsdl.auburn.edu/pdfs/MappingBook_FINAL.pdf for the booklet. Attendees will also have the opportunity to work on maps for his/her property or another area of interest. The course is designed for beginners and will provide hand-on experience online programs like the USDA/NRCS Web Soil Survey, Google Earth, and Alabama Historic Aerial Photo Archive. There will also be an overview of the USDA/NRCS Geospatial Data Gateway and USDA National Agroforestry Center CanVIS.
