Description: The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is offering a workshop on “Small Ruminant Health from A to Z,” including gastrointestinal parasitism management and FAMACHA training. The workshops are conducted at the beginning of the grazing and kidding season in early spring since this is the season when many health problems are more prevalent. The objective of the workshops is to educate farmers, veterinarian practitioners, Extension agents, and other interested persons on: •Best health management practices for small ruminants •FDA-approved and non-approved parasite deworming methods to treat GI parasitism among goat and sheep herds, including the FAMACHA test developed by South African scientists •McMaster technique of nematode fecal-egg identification and counting •Life cycle of gastrointestinal worms •Consequences of parasite-host interactions In addition, FAMACHA cards will be available for purchasing. The workshops are free; however, participants are encouraged to pre-register by calling the Houston County Extension Office at 334-794-4108, e-mail durwill@aces.edu or Dr. Maria Browning at (256) 372-4954.

Description: The Jefferson County Extension office (located at the C. Beaty Hanna Horticulture and Environmental Center) will be hosting a Master Gardener Volunteer Training Course on Thursdays, from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm, beginning January 12th and going through April 12, 2012. The purpose of this nationwide Extension education program is to train volunteers to be community educators by providing science-based information on growing and caring for plants in their landscapes and gardens. The training course will provide numerous hours of instruction in plant science and horticulture subjects. Specialists from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Auburn University, and local gardening experts will be the instructors for the course. The topics to be covered include Plant Biology, Soils and Fertility, Herbs and Perennials, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Plant Propagation, Woody Plant Selection, Plant Care and Pruning, Lawn Care and Weed Control, Vegetable Gardening and Composting, Invasive Plant ID and Control, and Landscape Design. After completing the course, Master Gardener interns will be required to give 50 hours of volunteer service to Extension and their communities through beautification projects, horticultural workshops and demonstrations, helping neighborhood schools and churches, and much more. Description: TIMBER TAX AND RETURN PREPARATION Locations and Dates: Auburn, AL February 16th; Livingston, AL February 21st; Huntsville, AL February 23rd; Tuscaloosa, AL March 1st; Fairhope, AL March 15th PROGRAM OBJECTIVE AND SPEAKER This program is designed to help landowners complete their income tax return for owning and/or selling timber. Basic items of income and expenses will be discussed and categorized for income tax purposes. Handouts will include copies of completed IRS forms. Dr. Robert A. Tufts is an attorney and Associate Professor in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University. He earned B.S. and M.S degrees in forestry from Louisiana State University and a Ph.D. in forestry from Virginia Tech. He also earned a J.D. from Jones School of Law, Faulkner University and a Master of Laws (in Taxation) from the University of Alabama. Dr. Tufts teaches estate planning, property law, environmental law, surveying, forest roads, and low-volume road design courses at Auburn University. His current research focuses on tax and property issues affecting forest land owners.
