Description: The Jefferson County Extension office (located at the C. Beaty Hanna Horticulture and Environmental Center) will be hosting a Master Gardener Volunteer Training Course on Thursdays, from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm, beginning January 12th and going through April 12, 2012. The purpose of this nationwide Extension education program is to train volunteers to be community educators by providing science-based information on growing and caring for plants in their landscapes and gardens. The training course will provide numerous hours of instruction in plant science and horticulture subjects. Specialists from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Auburn University, and local gardening experts will be the instructors for the course. The topics to be covered include Plant Biology, Soils and Fertility, Herbs and Perennials, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Plant Propagation, Woody Plant Selection, Plant Care and Pruning, Lawn Care and Weed Control, Vegetable Gardening and Composting, Invasive Plant ID and Control, and Landscape Design. After completing the course, Master Gardener interns will be required to give 50 hours of volunteer service to Extension and their communities through beautification projects, horticultural workshops and demonstrations, helping neighborhood schools and churches, and much more.
