Description: The Alabama Cooperative Extension System in partnership with Tennessee State University is providing a general workshop for the Black Belt Small Ruminant Producers Association, on decision-making in the consideration of starting and sustaining a small ruminant farming enterprise. The focus is on hair sheep and meat goat production systems for current and future association members and other interested parties. Topics include health, nutrition, genetics, growth and carcass traits, marketing, and information about funding opportunities for producers. Guest speakers will include representatives from the United States Department of Agriculture; the Alabama Department of Agriculture; Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Dr. Richard Browning, Jr. from Tennessee State University, and Dr. Maria L. Leite-Browning from Alabama A&M University. There will be a variety of open forums for producer questions and dialogue on issues related to production systems and the economics of small ruminant production. Seminars and hands-on animal demonstrations are also planned.
