Have you ever wondered why the nuts on your pecan tree are undeveloped? There are several pests that pecan trees can get which decrease the productivity of the tree. Homeowners can not spray big pecan trees like the commercial growers. But, planting disease resistant trees, along with proper fertilization, will help your pecan production.
On Tuesday, October 23rd there will be an educational pecan production workshop at the Autauga County Extension office in Autaugaville. On November 16th the pecan production meeting will be at the First Baptist Church in Sylacauga. The meetings begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 12 noon. Topics to be discussed at this meeting include site selection, cultivar selection, proper planting, fertility, weed control, irrigation, insects, disease, and pecan propagation. There is a $5.00 registration fee for these meetings and you must pre-register to attend. For more information or to pre-register for the Autaugaville class, please contact the Autauga County Extension Office at (334) 361-7273. To pre-register for the Sylacauga class contact the Coosa County Extension Office at (256) 377-4713. Alabama Cooperative Extension System Pecan Specialist Dr. Bill Goff and Pecan Research Assistant Cathy Browne will be presenting the information. |

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System will be joining with the Alabama Clean Water Partnership to host a "Rainwater Harvesting Workshop". The program will be held on Tuesday, October 23rd from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Houston County Extension Office in Dothan. The cost of the workshop is $35. Participants will learn the basics of setting up a cistern for harvesting nonpotable rainwater for use in gardens and landscapes. They will also learn how to use drip irrigation with a water harvesting system and how to construct a simple rain barrel. Attendees will leave the workshop with a completed rain barrel!

DHR clients will receive 16 hours of instruction on the Ages and Stages of Development from birth to age 19. Principles of Parenting will be addressed in an attempt to offer parents acceptable methods/techniques of parenting. Videos, power point presentations, discussions and hands on activities will be included. Participants will receive a resource binder and books appropriate to their chidren's age to encourage daily reading. Those attending all eight sessions will receive a certificate of participation. |
