Description: Description: The purpose of this workshop is to provide technical assistance and support to educators, community volunteers, Master Gardeners and others who are interested in developing and supporting youth gardening programs at local schools and within their communities. During this workshop, participants will be introduced to basic gardening information such as plant propagation, developing a garden area, plant selection, insects and disease, and other topics related to gardening successfully with children. In addition, we will present information pertaining to the Junior Master Gardener program, Alabama 4-H and Extension’s other resources and the Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program. All of these are educational resources designed to support youth gardening projects and environmental education. This workshop will be especially beneficial to educators, Alabama Cooperative Extension employees, local volunteers such as Master Gardeners and community garden supporters who are interested in developing and supporting youth gardening projects.

Description: CANCELED DUE TO LOW REGISTRATION There is a growing interest in restoring the longleaf pine ecosystem. Many believe that restoration includes clearcutting an existing stand and replanting with longleaf pine seedlings. But increasingly, and possibly even more importantly, we need to consider the restoration of existing mixed forests. Methods to restore the ecosystem are driven by multitude of factors including objectives, site quality, and past management history. This course will introduce you to silvicultural methods that can be used on a variety of existing forest sites. The use of fire as an important tool in the restoration process will also be discussed.
