Description: The fourth workshop in the Alabama Master Naturalist Program series is titled Alabama’s Herps and has been scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011 in Auburn. Alabama has a large variety of rep- tiles and amphibians that live throughout the state. There are 93 different native species of reptiles which includes 12 species of lizards, 49 species of snakes (6 of these are venomous, 31 species of turtles and of course the alligator. In addition, there are 73 species of amphibians which include 30 species of frogs and 43 species of salamanders. During the workshop, participants will see several live specimens of herps, while covering the following objectives. Describe the diversity and distribution of reptiles and amphibians in Alabama Describe the role of reptiles and amphibians in Alabama ecosystems Describe the natural history and basic biology of reptiles and amphibians Describe the adaptations of reptiles and amphibians and how these relate to environmental factors Describe the taxonomy of reptiles and amphibians Describe the key characteristics used to identify reptiles and amphibians Describe threats and/or issues relating to reptiles and amphibians in Alabama Understand the basic principles of reptile and amphibian management Recognize some common reptile and amphibian occurring in the local ecosystems Recognize rare or special species that indicate habitat qualities Understand appropriate techniques and methods for studying reptile and amphibian
