Description: Assessing meat goats from breeding to harvest, to meet the needs of the southeastern commercial meat goat industry. Program is designed to educate Extension personnel and producers on reproductive and genetic evaluation to improve commercial meat goat production. The program will present criteria for culling, keeping, and purchasing breeding stock for genetic improvement in a commercial or seedstock meat goat operation. Participants will learn how to select breeding stock based on traits economically important to meet objectives of a commercial meat goat enterprise. Dr. Richard Browing, Jr. at TSU will be the host. The herd will be in the second month of a three-month kidding season during our visit. For those unfamiliar with the research herd, it is a 250-head breeding program consisting of Boer, Kiko, Myotonic, and Spanish goats.
