Alabama's 4-H Summer Retreat

Over thirty-five Alabama 4-H members from across the state joined together recently to get “Back to Basics, Back to Green” at Troy University in Troy, AL for the 2006 Summer Retreat. Eleven of them were from right here in the Wiregrass Region!

At the conference, which was hosted by Alabama Collegiate 4-H, attendees participated in a variety of leadership building activities including collegiate and professional workshops and presentations. The workshops revolved around the 4 h’s: head, heart, hands and health; and brought participant’s attention back to the basics of 4-H. Workshops on teamwork, communication, service, leadership and healthy lifestyles kept participants up and moving with fun hands-on learning activities.

Hero Packs

The conference also conducted a youth service project supporting “Operation Military Kids”. Participants attended a training workshop and learned how to effectively write a letter of support to other youth who are enduring the deployment process with a parent or loved one. The participants then assembled over one hundred ‘Hero Packs’. These packs are given to military youth when parents are deployed. The packs included disposable cameras, VFW Panda Bears, journals, pens & pencils and a variety of other fun and entertaining toys or items. The project also included signing a Memory Wall with notes of support and caring, this poster will be past on to the family member of an Extension professional currently deployed.

Participants also got to relax and have some fun during the Retreat!. Indeed, they spent the rest of the afternoon cooling off by playing organized field and relay games. Most games included wet sponges and water balloons! It was a fun way to spend a very hot afternoon.

On the last night of the retreat participants attended a banquet where Col. John Schmidt, Vice-President of Troy University and a former 4-H member spoke to the group about servant leadership. Collegiate 4-H also presented several awards including the annual selection of Mr. and Miss 4-H. This year’s winners are Jarrett Moore from Lee County and Mariah Logan from Choctaw County.

Before leaving on Sunday morning six Geneva County youth presented “Nip-It” a tobacco use prevention skit and informational workshop.

This conference was an important opportunity for college-age youth and alumni 4-H members to give back to the 4-H community. It also strengthened their commitment the Collegiate 4-H motto, “Continuing to Share, Sharing to Continue.” For more information about the Collegiate 4-H program please visit,
