W. Kelly Mosley

W. Kelly Mosley was a prominent Atlanta businessman.  A native of Alabama and a 1924 graduate of Auburn University, Mr. Mosley began his professional career with Southern Bell in Atlanta in the same year.  Over the years, he served in various capacities for the company, rising through the ranks to positions of increasing responsibility.  He was promoted to assistant vice president in March, 1956, and from that date until he retired, on September 1, 1963, directed the public information, employee information and other public relations programs for the company's territory of nine southeastern states.  In his professional career, Mr. Mosley served as a vice president of both the Atlanta chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and the Atlanta Convention Bureau.

Civic contributions - Mr. Mosley was a past president and member of the board of directors of the Atlanta Kiwanis Club, and was district chairman of the public and business affairs committee of the Georgia district of Kiwanis International.

He was a life member of the board of directors of both the Georgia division and the Fulton County unit of the American Cancer Society, he also served as chairman of the Fulton County unit of the American Cancer Society, and chairman of the Fulton County cancer crusade.  Mr. Mosley was a  member of the executive committee of the national Polio Foundation.

Mr. Mosley served as a regional vice president, executive committee member, and national director of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association.  He was chairman of the Third Army civilian advisory committee.  Mr. Mosley served as a director of the Salvation Army advisory board, as a trustee of the Metropolitan Atlanta Boys' Club, and as director of the Metropolitan Atlanta Community Services.

He was a member of the Capitol City Club, and served as secretary/treasurer.  He was a former deacon of the Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta, and served as a trustee of Atlanta Baptist College.

Service to Education - Mr. Mosley served as national president of the Auburn Alumni Association for two consecutive terms (1963-65).  He supported Auburn's Engineering emergency fund and other general support funds, including the Auburn development program and Auburn annual giving.  The Auburn Engineering Alumni Council recognized his contributions to the profession by naming him  "Distinguished Auburn Engineer" in 1971.

Mr. Mosley served as chairman of the board of the John and Mary Franklin Foundation of Atlanta. Mr. Mosley was the moving force behind that foundation's support of an outstanding science and humanities lectures program at Auburn.  The Franklin lectures in Science and Humanities, inaugurated in October, 1968, brings at least three outstanding speakers in the sciences, engineering, or humanities to Auburn each year to make a public address and visit with professors and students.

Mr. Mosley was a member of Sigma Xi and an honorary member of Phi Kappa Phi.  He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from the Woodrow Wilson College of Law in Atlanta and received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from both Auburn University and Brenau University.  Auburn University honored Mr. Mosley with the Honorary doctor of Humanities degree in 1973 and bestowed the Award for Alumni Achievement in the Humanities in 1988.
