Invasive species are plants, animals, or other species that have been introduced into areas outside their native ranges. Invasive species usually have no natural enemies to limit their reproduction and spread. Most spread fairly rapidly displacing native species and damaging the ecosystems they are invading. Invasive alien species are recognized as a leading threats to biodiversity. Efforts to control them create enormous costs to agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and other enterprises. It is estimated that the annual cost to control invasive species and the damages they cause in the United States is $120 billion annually.
