Radon on Decatur council agenda

Printed: May 5, 2002; The Decatur Daily News, online edition

THE DECATUR DAILY:

The Decatur City Council will meet at 5pm Monday night in City Hall to discuss whether to include a requirement for radon testing in changes to the building code.

Julie Dutton, coordinator for the Morgan County Extension System, who supports radon testing, will speak at the meeting.

The Environmental Protection Agency says that radon levels in Morgan County are among the worst in the nation.

While up to 30,000 people a year die from radon-related lung cancer, the Decatur Building Department proposes omitting radon protection from a new building code.

Jimmy Brothers, Building Department director, proposes that the City Council adopt a new standardized building code, but he wants to omit a section requiring passive radon protection for newly constructed homes.

After work session, the council will have public hearings at meetings at 6 pm and 7 pm.

Among the agenda items is a recommendation from the Planning Commission to rezone about 40 acres north of Presbyterian Drive, west of Beltine Road Southwest, from single-family, semi-attached residential to general business district.
