As part of the challenge to improve education, state leaders have recognized the relevance and need for better environmental education in Alabama schools and communities. Since Alabama has such a great variety of natural attributes, environmental education can be readily incorporated into almost every academic subject — language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, vocational education, art, economics, and music. Properly conducted, environmental education can make study of these subjects more interesting and relevant to the quality of life that Alabamians enjoy. Through a host of problem-solving strategies, cooperative school/community projects and innovative teaching methods, environmental education can serve as a tool for improving education in practically any school discipline. In order to promote and encourage the infusion of environmental education
into Alabama schools and communities, EEAA annually recognizes
the outstanding efforts and projects conducted by students, educators,
schools,
community groups, and individuals, that enhance environmental quality
and increase citizen awareness of the environment, through the BEEP
Awards.
The awards program is open to all K-12 public and private schools, students and educators in Alabama; nature centers, zoos or museums; as well as community groups, organizations or individuals working toward educating our young people and the general public about the environment. There is no entry fee! For additional information about the BEEP Awards Program, if you have a question, or to receive an application brochure by U.S. Mail, please or call Jeff Hughes at 256.725.7027.
