Getting Ready for College Living

--Virginia Morgan

Remember the day you left for college? I was excited and scared, and wondered if I was prepared for the big time. If you are helping someone get ready to move to a college dorm or off-campus housing, don’t forget to pack an emergency supplies kit. No, the kit isn’t supposed to be “open in case of an empty refrigerator,” but instead should be essential items that can be quickly accessed in the event of an emergency.

Use a plastic tub to pack, store, and carry items such as water, food, first aid kit and a first aid handbook, batteries and flashlight, a couple of changes of clothes, extra blanket and pillow, some form of personal identification, extra set of car keys, extra medications, and contact lenses or glasses. The American Red Cross offers a more complete list. When you get to the dorm or the apartment and have unloaded that trailer, take a few minutes to fill out this emergency contacts card with your young person.

Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to school they go…prepared or not.
