Are You Prepared for Winter?
--Virginia Morgan
The first day of winter officially arrives with the shortest day of the year, December 21. Are you ready for it?
As with many things, the challenges of winter are easier to manage if you have prepared for winter. One of the first things I do when getting ready for winter is to make sure that all of my winter clothes are in the right closet so I will have easy access to them when needed. So, other than getting your clothes out of storage, what can you do to prepare for the coming cold months?
Check your emergency preparedness kit(s). Replace items such as food, water, and nonprescription medications that have reached their expiration dates. Ensure that other items, such as flashlight batteries and adhesive tape, are still usable. Check your kits for adequate supplies of personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, etc.); first aid items; paper products (paper towels, plates, and cups); plastic utensils; and garbage bags. Exchange clothing you included in your summer emergency preparedness kit with winter clothes and shoes or boots.
Don’t forget your car kit. If you get stranded in your vehicle, that kit could save your life. In addition to a working flashlight, food and water, and first aid supplies, include a blanket; a change of clothing; water-resistant footwear; mittens and a hat; a battery-operated radio and extra batteries; and tools such as a fire extinguisher, pliers, tape, a compass, and a folding shovel. For other items to include in your emergency supply kits, visit the American Red Cross Winter Storm page.
