Fequently Asked Questions
Q. Should I use crop oil with the fungicide Tilt on wheat?
A. The label for Tilt does not require the use of any surfactant when applying Tilt. Actually the use of crop oil with Tilt can be very damaging. Below you'll find two pictures of wheat sprayed with Tilt and crop oil.

Q. When can I see if my wheat is damaged by low temperatures?
A. Low temperatures, down to -10°F, are no problem for winter wheat if the plants are in the correct stage. If the plant haven't reached this stage before the winter or if warm weather in February caused the plants to come out of dormancy the plants are sensitive to low temperatures. Except for extreme low temperatures, damage assessment is only possible 7 to 10 days after the cold spell.
Read more about damage assessment in the timely information sheet 'Assessing Freeze Injury To Wheat'.
Q. Can corn be planted in a pasture with a warm-season perennial grass like burmudagrass or bahiagrass?
A. When Bermudagrass or bahiagrass pastures are killed with a herbicide, 10% will escape. Those warm season perennials can limit corn yield and are hard to control in corn. A better time to convert such pastures into row crops is at the end of the season in September or October followed by planting a small grain. A small grain crop will be tall enough in the Spring to out-shadow de warm season grasses. If a second crop is planted after the small grain any grasses that are present can be controlled at this time.

Q. Do I damage my wheat and lower my return when I spray the herbicide Harmony and liquid nitrogen as a tank mix?
A. You can mix both, but it will lower your return in two ways. First, spraying nitrogen can burn the leaves of wheat. If liquid nitrogen is going to be used, drip bars is a better solution. Secondly, for optimum use of inputs, nitrogen should be applied earlier than Harmony and vice versa. The cost of an extra trip over the field will be offset by the benefits of timely applications of both, especially if you use tramlines.
Q. Can the herbicide 2,4-D be used safely in wheat?
A. The herbicide 2,4-D is one of the most widely used herbicides in wheat in Alabama for broadleaf weed control. The time of application relative to the stage of the wheat is very important. Damage can be expected when this herbicide is sprayed at the wrong time. When sprayed to late the tillers will lay flat down instead of standing straight up, but will recover after about 10 days.
