Related Projects
AWW collaborates with other projects for mutually beneficial activities and additional financial resources:
Tallapoosa Watershed Project
The Tallapoosa Watershed Project, or TWP, is a three-year, USDA-funded project involving research, education and extension activities. Some of the AWW program staff, Lake Watch of Lake Martin and the Lake Wedowee Property Owners Association, are actively involved in this project.
Global Water Watch
The approach and techniques of AWW have been modeled in several countries for many years. A voluntary network of community-based water monitoring groups called Global Water Watch, or GWW, is being established and coordinated from Auburn University. AWW is a part of the GWW network.
Saugahatchee Watershed Management Plan
Saugahatchee Watershed Management Plan (SWaMP) was written to address specific water quality issues related to impairments in two 303(d) listed stream segments in the Saugahatchee Creek Watershed, Pepperell Branch and the Saugahatchee Creek Embayment of Yates Lake. The goal of the SWaMP stakeholder group is much broader, however, and pertains to how ecological integrity, water resources management and quality of life can be best sustained with inevitable population growth and accompanying economic development.
An early goal of the SWaMP stakeholders was to produce a publication for the education of the public on the history, geography, scientific studies, development, current watershed issues and ongoing watershed protection activities in the Saugahatchee Watershed. This publication, Saugahatchee Creek Watershed - Past, Present, & Future, is available in hard copy from the Alabama Water Watch office, call the toll-free number: (888) 844-4785.
ADEM Weathermen Project
A new project involving the Weather Teams of Montgomery's WSFA12 and Mobile's WKRG was launched in November 2004. AWW has provided much of the background information on the watersheds from the Citizen Guide to Alabama Rivers series. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management, StormCenter Communications, Inc. and Alabama Clean Water Partnership are also significant partners in this project. The purpose of the project is to provide science overviews to viewers during the local weather report. These overviews introduce topics related to the earth and its environment on a global and local scale; such as watersheds, nonpoint source pollution, stormwater runoff and best management practices as well as mention ways land use practices may impact our natural resources. The website is an expansion of the topics mentioned on TV during the weather report and provide such things as upcoming local environmental activities, finding your "watershed address" and localized quizzes that are a fun way to get people involved and interacting with the weather department.
