 AUMERC has ongoing projects involving oysters. This work involves inducing oysters to spawn in a laboratory and getting the larval oysters (left) to "set" on a substrate, or hard surface. This substrate is usually oyster shell since this is the substrate of choice in the natural setting.

The larval oysters are then placed in bags (below) and given time to grow free of predators in the brackish water of Peteet Mariculture Center. After the oysters have reached a size sufficient to survive in Mobile Bay, the bags are suspended between the surface and bottom of Mobile Bay until they reach a desirable market size.
