Winter Weed Control Winter lawn weeds can be controlled before they ever appear through by using pre-emergence herbicides. Use of these chemicals after weeds appear is ineffective. Application should be made once nighttime temperatures drop to 55-60 F for several consecutive days, around early September for north Alabama and late September to early October for south Alabama. Pre-emergence herbicides form a barrier layer in the soil that may not work effectively if disturbed. Therefore, aerification and dethatching should be done prior to applying herbicides. Aerification is a technique that provides better water penetration, drainage and increases soil aeration. Dethatching removes clippings and other debris embedded in the turf. The initial herbicide application usually lasts six to 12 weeks. A second application nine weeks after the first application will ensure season-long control.
