Size of Transplant Can Affect Tree's Ability to Survive Are you having trouble deciding whether to get a large or small tree for transplanting into your landscape? Dr. Dave Williams, a horticulturist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, says the size of the transplant can affect the tree's ability to survive and its growth rate after transplanting, so consider size along with your landscape needs and budget before buying. "Smaller trees will grow more quickly after transplanting than larger trees. Mulching and cultivating trees will protect against grass and weeds and also give the trees a better chance of surviving transplanting." In places where there is a chance of damage from equipment, animals or vandals, large trees survive transplanting better, Williams says. Although smaller trees may show a faster growth rate, it may be a while before they catch up in size to larger transplants.
