Slow-Release Fertilizers Good Alternative to Soluble Fertilizers

Slow-release fertilizers are a good alternative to soluble fertilizers, says Dr. Dave Williams, Extension horticulturist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

"With slow-release fertilizers, nutrients are released at a slower rate throughout the season. This allows plants to take up most of the nutrients with less waste by leaching."

Some advantages of using a slow-release fertilizer include convenience and less frequent applications. Also, fertilizer burn poses no problem, even with high rates of application.

Slow-release fertilizers are categorized by the process in which nutrients are released. Application rates will vary with the different types and brands.
