Watermelon: A Treat No Matter How You Slice It

What is better, or better for you, than a slice of cold watermelon on a hot summer day?  Here’s the good nutritional news:  A cup, of a 5 ½ -ounce slice of watermelon contains only 50 calories, no fat, no cholesterol and very little sodium.  What it does contain are important minerals and vitamins, including 15 mg of vitamin C, 186 mg of potassium and 585 IU of vitamin A.

Watermelon is economical too.  A 20-pound melon, cut into three-fourth-inch wedges, which equals one-sixth of a whole slice, will provide 90 pieces.

The underside color of a melon is best indicator of ripeness.  Look for a creamy color on the bottom – not a white or pale green.  Consider buying a cut melon.  It may cost a few cents more, but it may be worth it to see the melon’s interior.
