Landscaping Adds Value to Home, Mind and Body Today, more and more people are realizing the value of landscaping. “A well-designed, installed and maintained landscape can do wonders for your home. Not only will it increase your property value, it also provides a nice area for your family to enjoy,” says Dr. Dave Williams, horticulturist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Studies show among the professional, educated and married community, landscaping is very important. Younger people are also becoming more aware because they are buying homes and seeing the benefits firsthand. By landscaping, people are making the effort to improve the appearance of not only their own yard but of the whole community. The idea must be catching on because more people are making the investment. Well-chosen plants can help provide a safe and fun environment for family outdoor activities. There are also therapeutic benefits to gardening, Williams says. “Your lifestyle and property can be greatly enhanced by the gratifying work that goes into producing a beautifully landscaped yard.” After a hard day at the office, working outdoors can be just the means to relieve stress. “Gardening satisfies the basic human need to care for something and take pride in its success,” Williams adds. It is being used more and more as a working aid to help build character, self-esteem, cooperative skills, and patience among children and people with special needs. It is also an excellent means of exercise. A well-placed row of trees on a property line or near the house will break cold winter winds, reduce noise from traffic or neighboring houses, and provide privacy. Planting a thick hedge, particularly those with thorns or spiny leaves, can help keep intruders at a safe distance from your low windows. If you live on a slope, plants can stabilize your soil and prevent costly erosion problems. Installing and maintaining a well-landscaped yard is an investment of time and money, but you will find both are well spent. Landscaping is an activity the whole family can take part in, and it is a terrific way to spent time together.
