4-H Week Proclamation Whereas, Oct. 3-9 is National 4-H Week in the United States, and, Whereas, more than 5 million youths take part in 4-H club programs nationwide; and, Whereas, 4-H is ranked fourth in total awareness among agencies serving youth; and, Whereas the Alabama Cooperative Extension System conducts 4-H programs through the state land-grant universities with the mission to help young people acquire knowledge, develop life skills and form attitudes which will help them become self-directing, productive members of society; and, Whereas, 4-H addresses issues facing youth wherever they live -- in inner cities, suburbs and rural communities and helps break barriers by focusing on learning-by-doing; and, Whereas, 4-H builds youths self-esteem, leadership and citizenship skills, and focuses on critical issues such as protecting the environment; and, Whereas, 4-H has programs on food and nutrition, science and technology, natural resources, substance abuse prevention, growing plants, caring for farm animals, career education, community pride, citizenship and leadership; and, Whereas, more than 85,000 youth are active in 4-H programs in the state of Alabama; and, Whereas, exciting, fun and student-centered educational programs are available through county 4-H School Enrichment programs; and, Whereas, more than 3,300 adult volunteers in Alabama and more than 600,000 nationwide, donate countless hours and effort each year in preparing for and teaching youth; and Be it therefore resolved, that I,_________________ the _________________of ______________________(city or county), hereby declare October3-9, 1999 as 4-H Week in _______________(city or county),
Alabama.
ATTENTION 4-H AGENTS: This sample proclamation is for you to use in your county or city proclaiming Oct. 4-10 as National 4-H Week. Please note the information on the proclamation is general. You should add statements to localize it as needed. For example, if one of your 4-H judging teams placed first or second in the state or in the top five at the national level; or if you have a 4-H'er who was selected to attend National 4-H Congress; or if one of your 4-H programs received a Gold Kist Community Pride grant for outstanding service, etc., add them to the proclamation. For example: Whereas, the Coosa County 4-H Forestry Judging team won place at State 4-H Congress in 1999 and 4th place in the National Judging competition, ... or Whereas, more than 1,300 students, age 9 to 19, are involved in 4-H at ___ different schools in _____________county, and have prepared more than _______ entries in local, county and state competitions; ... The proclamation can be from a school
principal or superintendent, city mayor, city or county commission, or
even the governor. If any of these people agree to do a proclamation, have
a picture taken ( with the person, 4-H'ers, volunteers and agents) the
week before 4-H week so it will reach the newspaper and/or television station
in your area during 4-H week. Most weekly newspapers have a Friday morning
