WELLBORN CABINET TO PRESENT "EXCELLENCE IN
WOODWORKING" AWARDS
AUBURN, APRIL 28,
2000---Wellborn Cabinet Inc. of Ashland, Ala., has joined the Alabama Cooperative
Extension System to help young people in Alabama explore interest in woodworking while developing a sense of
purpose, direction and accomplishment.
The company will provide Wellborn Excellence in Woodworking awards to winners in 4-H Wood Science Exhibits
and Wood Science Demonstrations at six district roundups in June and at State 4-H Congress in July.
"Young people taking part in these woodworking projects learn technical skills to develop the craft of woodworking
and develop their abilities to make public presentations," says Chuck Hill, 4-H specialist with the Alabama
Cooperative Extension System.
This project also provides 4-H'ers with proficiency in personal responsibility, following directions, planning and
carrying out complex tasks. Historically, this project has served as an excellent focal point for young people who
become interested in woodworking either as a career or as a life-long hobby. Past winners also have used their
presentations skills in a wide array of professional and community accomplishments.
The objectives of the woodworking activity are to:
Aid young people in acquiring skill and experience in all phases of woodwork
Build proficiency in fabricating items made of wood
Develop the ability to read plans and specifications
Gain skill in keeping complete and accurate records
Develop leadership abilities among young people
Develop skills in the use of tools and in the care and conditioning of woodworking tools
Develop strong safety habits when using woodworking tools
Acquire good communications skills in demonstrating to others the fundamentals of wood science
The Wellborn family knows firsthand the impact such programs have on young people.
"Because all our children were active in 4-H while growing up, and our boys were participants in woodworking
projects, we personally experienced the importance of 4-H and know the impact it has on youth who are pursuing of
a career or hobby in the woodworking industry."
